gas gauge stuck near empty, does not move when I get gas

I had just started driving today when I suddenly realized my gas gauge reading was near empty, but I was sure I had plenty of gas at that time. I quickly filled up the tank and, to my utter astonishment, the gauge did not move and continued to show near empty. Is there something my son can do to repair this problem, or should I go to my service station?
