I inherted a 1995 dodge neon from my nephue.

It is an automatic transmision and the shifter is very finicky. It starts only in Neutal, and to get it to go into drive you must shift it to D2 and then into drive. To get it into reverse you need to either push it up into park and back into r or to d2 then back to r. From the forems I have read online the neutral think may be the safety neutral switch. I have taken the cover off the center consule and looked at the shifter assembly and it appears worn and will pop back and forth from from neutral and drive without pushing in the button on the side of the shifter.

My question is:

Does the assembly need to be replaced or can it be adjusted?
