| poor mileageHi all , I have a 2003 3.3 Grand Caravan 80000km and the last couple of months my fuel mileage has beeen terrible! I get about 10-12mpg, where i used to get about 23-25mpg. I change oil regularly, have changed oil, air filters, and will change the plugs in the near future.I can sit in idle and watch the numbers drop on the car computer! Any one have any more to offer? |
| Try installing a K&N air intake system. |
| Yes , I have a 2008 Grand Caravan. What a piece of junk. Cheap, cheap, cheap. And the mileage is awful. The last Dodge product I will ever own. I have owned a Chev Venture before, it had far better mileage. |
#304/27/09 13:54Herb Bosworth | with your poor mileage think about an addative like Z-Max, Lucas oil gas and trans. engine treatments. You have nothing to lose and every thing to gain. And all these product can be found in your local parts stores. |
| I agree with the previous response about gas treatments. I also smell the gas when i pump. if you dont smell gas, its probably watered down. if thats the case change the gas station that you are using. I get great gas mileage. |
#505/30/09 11:46Josh Kehl | try changing the fuel filter and pcv valve. Also maybe have a injection cleaning at a local repair shop |
| Our 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT has just under 3, 000 miles on it, and the gas mileage is awful. Around town (not just stop-and-go driving), it averages 14-16 mpg. We traded in a 2004 Pontiac Montana that got WAY better mileage. Should have kept that vehicle. |
| i have put new tires on, did a tune up and my gas mileage is still 14 .oil change, gas filter, plugs etc. was included in tune up .i switched gas stations put in high grade gas still 14 miles to gallon.i do have alot of miles on car but ive kept up oil changes etc but in june my mileage dropped and stayed there.before june i got 19 -21 miles around town.i dont know what else to try. |
| I HAVE A 1998 CADDY THAT WAS GETTING 16 AROUND TOWN. AFTER I HAD A NEW AIR FILTER INSALLED, I GET 12. COULD IT BE THE SENSOR IS BAD?? |
#911/13/09 14:07Edward Thompson | The Carravan has to many sensors, there are 2 that are probably at fault. The air sensor, in the air intake system. And the Oxegen sensor, in the exhaust system. I'm a mechanic/inventor, Not an english teacher so excuse my spelling. |
| I had same problem on a 3.3L engine. Exchanged oxygen sensor and fuel mileage returned to normal. Ron |
| I just looked it up for my 03 grand cara and epa says 16-18 mpg in the city and 20-24 hwy. thats what I get and I thought someting was wrong, guess I can go buy a big honkin suv like a suburban and get the same or better. |
| Ex-wife had a 06 Grand caravan 3.3 and was getting 20 mpg. Put in the correct weight oil, 5w-20, and put in the amsoil synthetic (dealer changed it before purchase and put in 10w-30)and milage went up to 25 mpg. |
| My sister and law both just bought 2010 Dodge Caravans and we are getting terrible gas mileage. I used to have a chevy venture as well and it was much better on gas. I would try all the suggestions but it is brand new. Only 1000 km's on it. Do I go back to the dealer and see whats going on?? It is supposed to be 17/24 mpg but it is not even close to that. |
| Same here....I bought an 05 expedition 5.4litre that gets the same mileage as this 08 caravan, in city and highway. |
| I also got really bad mileage. I had the oxy sensor checked. It was all over the place. Found a tiny hole in muffler. Put on new muffler and rear oxy sensor in exhaust and mileage is good now. 18 - 20 in town 21 - 25 highway. Just what worked for me. |
#1608/07/10 02:10krislou80 | A stuck-open PCV valve will allow unmetered vacuum to cause a lean air/fuel mixture. The engine management system will "fatten-up" the fuel injection spray time to compensate for a lean air/fuel ration, thus using more fuel to accomplish the same task. It can cost you at the pump & cost you in damaged engine-related repairs. Change your air filter every 10K miles & your PCV valve every 25K miles. Run your tire pressures up to the rated pressures on the sidewalls: 35PSI, 44PSI, etc, NOT what the door sticker says. The car manufacturer advises about a 40% reduction from the tire maker's pressure to give the car a soft ride. Look into any large fleet & you'll discover that all their vehicles run at tire maker's pressures to maximize tire life & fuel mileage. I took my 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac V8 to 44PSI instead of the 32PSI the door sticker said & got 4 MPG more. |
| What is causing my MPG average in my 2003 Dodge Caravan 3.3 flax to dropped this year from 20-24 to 16-19? Could it be the 10% Ethanol the gas stations are being force to put in their gas? I also have to push harder on the accelerator to make it get up and go. I do not have an EGR valve on this engine to clean. I keep my engine properly maintain. I graduated the top in my class from Chrysler Motect in 1973 I am not like most owners of this vehicle, I like my Caravan, and it has 142000 miles on it. It is my truck and it has paid for itself twice over. This is my first big problem with it except for the Multifunctional turn signal switch, it only last about 3 years. . What do you feel is the problem with this engine? |
#1810/25/10 20:07julyriver | i own a 1993 caravan with 88.000 miles on it, i changed EGR, map sensor and installed a K&N air filter, no codes showed by the computer. before i used to get 20 to 25 MPG. it has lots of power but i am getting 12 to 14 MPG. what could be the problem? |
| I own a 2010 grand caravan SE with a 3.3L engine, 2000km on it. I was doing 430km(75L of gas, 80$ in here in Quebec) and the low fuel light turns ON. Thats 15.4L/100KM (I don't know how to convert in MPG). I was doing 550KM with 80L on my old Astro 4.3L!!! The dealer said 8.6/12.4 when I bought it. I am far from this. I went back to the dealer and they told me that since there is no check engine light ON, they can't do anything. I've tryed to drive with 'esp OFF', and with 'ECO on' in the dash. When the 'ON' desapears, I ease back on gas. Drived at 95kmh (60mph) on highway instead of 100kmh. I've inflated 4 tires at 36PSI. All windows up, A/C OFF (I've never used this option because we don't need this at this time of the year here in Canada. I've improved my milleage! 512km before the low fuel light turns ON. I love my Caravan, it's perfect for my family, but I hate to drive like an old grandpa just to gain a normal milleage!! |
| I would try changing spark plugs wires and air filter, also I agree with the above comments about fuel additives and KNN air filters or even the tornado air filter. |
#2112/22/10 21:34joyce smith | I too recently purchased a brand new, 2010 grand caravan se.I agree with the countless others the gas mileage is terrible --I've had it 2 weeeks and put over $$250.00 gas in already HELP ME--I need it for work what can I do??? |
| I have a 99 Town and Country. We just bought it and it has oversized tires, taller for the most part. We are getting 10 mpg average combined city and highway. The 3.3 has 104000 miles and runs like new. Could the oversize tires be the problem??? Thanks |
#2302/11/11 11:48Frank D. | Have the same problem with my 2010 Grand Caravan (purchased May 2010). Took it into the dealership several times and they gave me a bunch of bull about a floating gas gauge and that it's supposed to return the gas when it settles. I've actually gone to two dealerships, and at both I've met techs who own the same van and have the very same issue. Long story short, I was given an 800 number to initially report a lemon law claim. That failed, but they are sending one of their techs to the dealership to assist the dealership in accessing and repairing the issue. They basically said they are not aware of the problem because no one is calling in about it. My recommendation: CALL 800-992-1997, REPORT THE ISSUE, AND HAVE THEM DO THE SAME FOR YOU. Maybe there is something faulty in the manufacturing of these vehicles and they may have to be recalled or something. If you could please, keep me posted on your status. |
#2402/18/11 14:25Frank D. | This is an update to my previous post (#23): I was wondering if you have a regular Grand Caravan or one with the flex fuel option. I am experiencing same problem with my 2010 Grand Caravan SE with the flex fuel option (purchased May 2010). I've taken it to two different dealerships at least six times, and basically have been getting a lot of bull in terms of assistance. I've met a tech at each of the dealerships who own the same van and have the very same issue. Long story short, I was given an 800 number to initially report a lemon law claim. That failed, but they were supposed to send one of their techs to the dealership to assist the dealership in accessing and repairing the issue. They basically said they are not aware of the problem because no one is calling in about it. My recommendation: CALL 800-763-8422 and ask for Mary Beth. She is a supervisor who I am working with directly (do not speak with Eric ... he is very rude), REPORT THE ISSUE. Right now, she has asked the tech to call his district manager to get him involved in the matter, as well. In addition, the dealership is having me keep a record of the miles I travel between filling up and how many gallons are required to fill up as a means of determining where fuel economy and where the issue may lie. We've also discovered that their diagnostic system seems to reset the van's computer, and it seems to act right for a period of two months or so before it starts drinking heavily again. I'm assuming there is something faulty in the manufacturing of these vehicles and they may have to be recalled or something. I'm trying to get as many people as possible active in bringing this issue to the surface so that we can all get relief from this burden. Should you decide to act, please click the link on my name to email me and keep me posted on your progress. Thank you |
