I have had my car towed 5 times now due to it running so rough and then stalling (affecting the steering and brakes) that I don't feel safe driving it. The dealership can't figure it out. It will run great for period of time (a month or so) and then arbitrarily the problem starts again. I have had a vaccuum hose replaced, the CAM replaced, the fuel tank emptied. Tonight it started again. It was on a half a tank of gas and I pulled into a gas station and filled it all the way up and it seemed to help. This is crazy. I don't have a lot of money to replace all the items suggested. HELP ME PLEASE!
I forgot to put that it's a 2005 Dodge Caravan.
I have a 2005 Dodge Caravan. For the past 6 months I have had a problem with the car stalling. The Dodge Dealership has replaced a vaccuum hose, the CAM sensor, the thermostat, and checked the gas tank for debre and/or blockage. It will run rough for a couple days; then for no apparent reason, it will start running fine again. I have switched to Premium gas. Last night it started running rough and stalling at half a tank of gas. I stopped by the gas station and filled it all the way with Premium and bam! Running fine today. I do not have the money to replace every possible part/sensor, etc, that it would be. Just want to figure out which part needs replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jymme 303-328-8364.
WELL AFTER 5 MONTHS I GOT THE VAN RUNNING LIKE NEW TO ALL OF YOU WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS TRY THE SPEED SENSOR 48.50 @ CAR QUEST I DID AND THE VAN NOW RUNS LIKE NEW..I RAN IT FOR 21/2 HOURS AND DROVE 65KM..VERSES , , 15 MIN THEN SPUTTERING AND STALLING
SEEMS THAT THIS OUTPUT SENSOR ALSO CONTROLS FUEL AND AIR MIXTURE..TO PCM..FOUND THE P1391..CODE ON A SITE SAYING DODGE PEOPLE LIST IT AS A SPEED SENSOR FAULT..
I HAVE CHASED THIS TROUBLE FOR 5 MONTHS..WILL UPDATE ALL IF STALLING STILL. WEEKLY..JUST TO KEEP YOU GUYS UPDATED..HOPE THIS EASY FIX WORKED..DAVE
I have a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan.
The engine turns off while driving and engine won't start back up for a couple of hours. This problem does not happen often, only once in July, once in October and once today. First time, it was while the car was stopped at a traffic light, while the other 2 times were normal driving at around 50km/hr (35mph). The oil pressure sensor light comes on before the engine turns off. It won't start right away, but if you leave it for a couple of hours, the car starts up and runs normally without any issues. I have brought towed it to 2 mechanics and both times, it started back up fine and did not have any error codes from the computer, so they aren't sure what the issue is. No other lights on the instrument panel turns on other than the oil pressure sensor light that turns on before the engine shuts off. I have lots of gasoline in the car and engine oil has been changed regularly and is full.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
WELL THE VAN RUNS LIKE NEW BUT.....IT HAD TO GET A TOW HOME..WHY WHO KNOWS IT WOULD NOT START ..GOT HOME AND TURNED KEY BANG STARTS AND RUNS LIKE NEW..MY ..GUESS PCM NEEDS RESET AFTER ALL NEW SENSORS INSTALLED, , , VAPOR LOCK... IT WAS RAINING..MAYBE GROUNG FAULT OR BAD WIRE
GOING TO GIVE IT TILL NEXT WEEK THEN OFF TO DEALERS..FOR THE BIG BUCK CHECKUP AND STING..
I'm having a lot of the same problems you all mention with my 1998 V6 3.0 Dodge Caravan sport. When I got it (at auction) it wants to die at stops or idle down when I drove it home, but when I drove it all the way 2 hours home it didn't die at highway speeds. My mechanic friend who didn't charge me anything thank God. But I did put fuel injector cleaner in it and it seems to be running better, I drove it to mechanic friends house a mile Sunday night and it didn't die until the last stop sign before. He drove it around and said it didn't die til it got warmed up. So I drove it home tonight Tuesday and it didn't die on me until I got home to park it, died 2 or 3 times but mostly starts right back up. Called my uncle and he thinks it could be the fuel pump. But another mechanic friend told me fuel filter by the gas tank.
I would suggest to the rest of your problems on here to start with a less than $2 bottle injector cleaner, then go up to a $10 can of sea foam cleaner. Unless you have mechanic's that can pin point the problem piece. I did have to change the IAC idle air control valve on my 93 oldsmobile station wagon that was doing the same symptoms. But the IAC on this van was changed in August 2010. Look forward to any help. Thank God the internet forums are still mostly free instead of a diagnosis from arm and leg mechanics!
Hi I forgot to mention that my AC and In van air circulation push buttons by the heat/ac control lights keep blinking / flashing and I can't get them to turn off. Hopefully this will help narrow down the problem of the van dying when idling down or a stop!
I talked to the mechanic mentioned in the last email. He said it's the idle position sensor on my van which mainly called the Throttle Position Sensor TPS or can be known as the Throttle Speed Sensor. $76 from Oreillys Auto Parts here in town for order. Gonna try and find it cheaper. But I was reading on the internet that the TPS is the culprit of a lot of mine and yours van symptoms. Will let you know as soon as I can afford to buy and replace it. But they say you can also adjust them I might try that first or even just take it off and put some throttle body cleaner in it and then see how it runs after putting it back on!
Hope this helps anyone, just google Throttle Position Sensor!
I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor and unfortunately it did the same thing. Thankfully it only cost $24, but when your almost broke. Have you checked the timing on yours. Going to borrow my parents timing light tomorrow and see if it's the timing belt perhaps. It only does it when it turns on an incline sometime and it gets warm. The guy that sold it had the IAC idle air control valve replaced on it back in june but I guess next I'm going to take that out next and see if I spray some cleaner on it and up in the intake body it's located in to see if It works right after that, quits dying at stops or idle on turns. Let me know thanks. Have you replaced the IAC on yours?
I have a 2000 Grand Caravan SE with 3.3 Gasoline/FF. 150k miles.
I have never had a problem..van always ran excellent. Yesterday it died while driving at 35 mph cruising. we pulled over and it cranked for a few seconds before starting...then ran great. Today it did it 3 times...same thing just up and died while driving. It always starts right away but i dont know it always will. This van has been babied and drivin very nice...I dont know where to start. Any information would be helpful...also there does not seem to be ODBII, is this stanard or optiniol for my year?
WELL GUYS WENT TO THE DEALER..DID DIAGNOSTIC..PLAYED WITH WIRES TOOK FOR A RUN'...THEY SAY VANS GOOD BUT THE SPUTTER..MAYBE BAD PCM..1000.00 BUCKS OR BAD WIRE AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO CHASE IT DOWN ..SO I WILL BUY PCM ONLINE INSTALL MYSELF AROUND 300.00
THEN PULL WIRES AND TEST MORE SENSORS..TEMP, , INPUT SPEED SENSOR.
I WILL SLAO BE LOOKING FOR A SHOP EHAT HAS A MACHINE THAT MONITORS THE SYSTEM TO CATCH THIS , , WHILE VAN RUNNING..
100.00 FOR DIAGNOSTIC..100.00 FOR 1 HOUR CHECKING VAN..5.00 FOR CALLING IN ON PAY AS YOU GO CELL TOTAL TRYING TO RESOLVE THIS AROUND 1600.00 ...6 MONTHS AND LOTS OF BACK YARD MEC..TIME
PS..THEY SAY THE PCM CHECKS THE FAULTS BUT MAY HAVE BAD OR CRACK IN BOARD I DON'T THINK SO
I have a 99 dodge grand caravan 3.8
it just started sputtering on cold days for about 5 min till warm then it runs fine. While driving every once in a while it will die sometimes when it is warm and sometimes when it is hot. No SES lights no other problems. What would you suggest I start with?
Thanks for any help!
Hey do you all think that our abrupt stalling dying of our vans could be the alternator going out? I have noticed lately a brief power down of electrical power when driving my van and maybe it's not getting enough power at idle downs, especially turns, but runs great on the highway at high RPMs to keep the alternator working faster!
Kevin i don't think it would be alt..I was searching the net for more clues and saw a post saying it could be the key tumbler getting warm from use and the contacts wearing out this may be my last thing on my list..for now 1..check as many connections and wires for bad connections and spray wd 40 on wires for moisture 2..then Temp sensor.3.then input speed sensor.4.replace main positive tension line , 5, clean abs..sensors on each wheel..
5 clean egr vale and tube to valve cover better..LOOK FOR A SHOP THAT CAN SCAN THE SYSTEM WHILE VAN IS RUNNING TO SHOW WHERE THE TROUBLE SPOT IS..MY DEALER SAYS THEY DON.T HAVE THIS ITEM;; BUT I HAVE SEEN ONE BEFORE IT WAS ON A YOUTUBE ..JUST FORGOT WHICH ONE..
WILL UPDATE SOON
Hi, I have a 99 caravan stalling like the other guys!I just took it to my mechanic and yes the check engine light was on.he plug in his computer and it let him know that my crank and cam sensor need replacement.i did and it's still the same.she starts right up, but when i put it on drive she shuts off or will stay on until i give it gas, then she shuts off.he put the computer back on and its reading the same thing!(CRANK AND CAM SENSOR)what could it be?PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT!!oh.and i have replaced all spark plugs oil filter air filter gas filter.the van was sitting for 6mths before it was given to me due to this problem.thx for your help.
97 Grand Caravan 3.3L 305, 000 miles. Iím having some of the same symptoms others are having. Mine cranks fine idles great and runs smooth down the hwy. HOWEVER, when we come to a stop itís like it looses signal or something, it will die. BUT not all of the time and it will crank right up. I replaced the TPS, PCV, Plugs Wires, Idle control valve, two cans of seafoam and throttle cleaner. No check engine light very frustrating. Only thing left EGR, 02 sensor maybe knock sensor or coil replacement??? LOL who knows any help is greatly appreciated
GUYS I HAVE RUN ON EVERYTHING..MY SHOP SAYS 1..WIRING SHORT IN HARNESS..OR PCM MAY HAVE A CRACK IN BOARD..I WILL LOOK FOR A SHOP WHO CAN CHECK FOR THE SHORT WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING..ALSO WILL CHASE WIRES NEXT WEEK WHEN OFF FOR XMASS..HAVE NOT CHANGED TEMP SENSOR..OR OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR..OR...FRONT..O2 SENSOR..WILL LET EVERYONE KNOW HOW IT GOES..MY BEST GUESS IS ITS A SHOT IN WIRING AND I HAVE TO FIND IT ..
Jon I would start with the IAC idle air control valve, but actually before that start with fuel injector cleaner in a few tanks of gas, they also make stuff called "sea foam" which is about 8$ a can!
UPDATE: I have pluged the EGR hose and now it does not stall when we come to a stop. I still have no check engine light??? but its not stalling, also I have noticed it no longer has a stutter between 1500 to 2000 rpms like it did. I would for ya'll to know this summer I replaced the fuel pump because it was bad and also the fuel filter. My problem only started in Nov of this year. I will continue to see if this works for me and report back. Might have to replace the EGR but for now it not stalling. Hope this helps someone.......
I have a 2003 Caravan with the 3.3L engine. It stalls 1-2 minutes after leaving the gas station with a just filled tank. Some times catches you while making a turn. Starts right back up when you crank the starter. Any ideas how the evap emmision system might fit into this? Gas cap and seal?
I previously had a 93 with the 3.0 engine and had problems with the switch portion of the ignition switch. It was intermittent but when replaced problems disappeared.
