| Broken Hood LatchThe cable for my hood release on a 95 Caravan broke. How do I jimmy the hood open without the latch release.Cheers Bob |
| Where did the cable break? Is it still visible? You can look where the hood release was and if the cable is still there you can use pliers to pull it so it will pop your hood. try that. |
| Hello does any one what the part number is? and or what's the name |
#308/06/09 18:25jennifer cutler | 99 Dodge Grand Caravan the hood latch cable broke from the inside, but the cable is smashed under the hood and we cannot open it by pulling on the cable with pliers..how do we get to the hood latch to release it manually? |
| My hood latch hook has broken from the inside I can see a silver wire I've pulled on it several times can't get hood open. I was only able to priy the hood open just a little can't really see hook, latch or anything. |
| on the 1998, chysler, town and country, the hood latch is broke from the inside and wont release. if the latch wont release how can it be opened. |
| unscrew the grill then the latch should be visable so you can push the release |
#705/08/10 07:15James Warren | I can not open my hood. Not sure if the cable is broken, it does not feel broken. Problem started after installing a new radiator. Open hood once after installation but would not open the second time. How can O open the hood manually? |
#805/11/10 00:40James Warren | I had a problem with the hod release mechansim on my 1998 Dodge Caravan. Here is how i solved the problem. After spending a hour at the junk yoard I figured out how to open my hood. On the crossmenber (that is the bar that the hood latch is attached to) there is a hole at the bottom of it and there is a slot in the cross member right behind the latch. So here is how I got my hood opened. I jacked the front end of the van up high enough to fit underneath comfortably (please use jack atnads when you do this). I took a 3/16" steel rod 36" long and made a 1" bend in one end and a four inch bend in the other end. I inserted the rod with the one inch bend into the hole in the crossmember (the hole between the two fan units) and manuevered into the slot behind the latch assembly. I twisted the rod counter clockwise and walla the hood opened. I found my hood release cable had become detached from the lock assembly. After reconnecting the cable to the latch, everything woerked fine. I hope this technique helps you Dodge minivan owners (1996-2000) when your hood won't open. |
#905/11/10 00:52James Warren | Please excused the typos in my first message, i was typing with little light on the keyboard. Here is the message again with no typos. I had a problem with the hood release mechansim on my 1998 Dodge Caravan (see Reply #7). Here is how I solved the problem. After spending a hour at the junk yard I figured out how to open my hood. On the crossmenber (that is the bar the hood latch is attached to and covers the radiator assembly), there is a hole at the bottom of it and there is a slot in the cross member right behind the latch. So here is how I got my hood opened. I raised the front end of the van high enough to fit underneath comfortably (please use jack stands when you do this). I used a 3/16" steel rod 36" long(available at local hardware store), and made a one inch bend in one end and a four inch bend in the other end. I inserted the rod with the one inch bend into the hole in the crossmember (the hole between the two fan units) and manuevered into the slot behind the latch assembly. I twisted the rod counter clockwise and walla the hood opened. I found my hood release cable had become detached from the lock assembly. I love the guy who said "just unscrew the front grille" because you can't unscrew the grille without opening the hood. DUH! |

I found that the answer given by Mr.Warren "I used a 3/16" steel rod 36" long(available at local hardware store), and made a one inch bend in one end and a four inch bend in the other end. I inserted the rod with the one inch bend into the hole in the crossmember (the hole between the two fan units) and manuevered into the slot behind the latch assembly. I twisted the rod counter clockwise and walla the hood opened." has to require that you already have a clear mental picture of the mechanism. I eventually got mine open (I had stupidly been pulling the wrong lever, "duh" to me) and when I saw the mechanism in relation to where I was moving the steel rod saw that I would probably never have gotten it open. My recommendation is drill enough holes through the hood to get access to the mechanism and then fiberglass over the holes and touch up the paint. Thanks to everyone. |
