Dodge-Grand Caravan - Starter?

When I go to start my 2001 Dodge grand caravan the lights come on and there is power, there is a short humming noise from the motor, and there is the sound of a switch turning but the van does not start. I try about 3-5 times until finally the van starts. What is the problem?

Starter is bad. I had the same issue with my 97 and in fact, took starter off to have it checked at auto parts store. It checked out as good, so after re-installing it, I got about 2 more months out of it when it acted up again. I dis-assembled the starter, and cleaned the commutator and brushes, lubricated the bendix, and it still would not work! New starter is approx 125 dollars, and installation was pretty easy. Get a repair manual if you do not already have one to get an overview of the job first. A mechanic will charge you plenty to put it in, but it can be done by you if you have some mechanical aptitude. Good luck.

Check the battery cable coming of the positive post. Mine corroded back into the insulation, not allowing enough current to reach the starter. Auto parts stores carry a replacement end for about 20 dollars.
