I have a 1998 grand caravan. It doesn't easily shift into drive or reverse. Once it does shift into gear it makes a grinding noise until it reaches 15mph. Then it drives fine in the higher gears. What could be the problem?
I have a 1997 Plymouth Voyager SE w/ 2.4, 4 cylinder engine and 4 speed tansmission. Trans will not up-shift and will actually let me get up to 45mph in first gear (not a good thing).
Tried the simple fluid and filter replacement. Then by advice replaced solenoid pack w/ new fluid and filter. Thought problem was solved but within 10 miles... no upshift again. Blamed the solenoid pack and parts house was gracious enough to warranty but within 10 miles of driving with the second replacement solenoid pack, no up-shift again. Fluids are topped off and speedometer and tach are functioning. There is no check engine light on or any codes at this point.
Any ideas? Chime in if you have any suggestions!

Thank ya'll VERY much for your inputs. I am NOT mechanically inclined - From your inputs, I changed the relay, then cut vehicle off - turned key 4 times as mentioned above, and problem seems to be fixed. Problem was: would not change gears - drove along around 4000 rpm - i NEVER would have been able to fix this on my own - thank's again folks and may God bless each and every one of you!

"2003 Grand Caravan won't shift"
My friends Caravan won't shift out of 1st gear. I tried the on and off ignition trick with no luck. I went to my local parts store and they can't find a transmission "relay" in their computer. Could it be called a transmission switch? They parts store is sending me the right and left transmission speed sencors. They said it's the cause of most of the dodges transmission problems. Does ANYONE think this is going to solve the problem?
"Won't shift into 3rd and 4th gear"
Transmission won't shift into 3rd and 4th gear at times. Replaced the in and out speed sensors...still not working?
"atx relay switch"
where is the atx relay switch and does anyone have a part number for a 2001 dodge caravan se?
"Transmission control module, aka theTCM, aka the transmission computer"
For those still having problems with their transmission not shifting and staying in "limp" mode: My daughter and I replaced the transmission control module (the transmission computer aka, the TCM) and it fixed the problem :) We had already replaced the input/output speed sensors. The dealership we spoke to said this was the part they ordered the most on the caravans.
The TCM is located underneath the driver side wheel well liner(held on by 3 or 4 screws). The old TCM can be taken out by unscrewing three screws, that's it! If my 17 year old daughter can do this, anyone can.
Hope this helps.
