We have a 2001 Caravan with the speedometer needle on the wrong side of the peg. It just happened one Sunday morning and it is a pain to drive. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

1998 dodge caravan- the service engine soon light keeps coming on, and then going off, what service is required and how long can it be held off for and if so is there a major repreccussion for putting it off for a bit.

With key in off position, hold reset on trip portion of speedowmeter until lite comes on. Allow the vehicle to reset everything and this problem shoudl be solved. It only cost me $150.00 the first time to have this repair done. It still upsets me to think people will take you just for money. No special tools required.

Reply #6 Glenn Morris (75.190.238.124) - Fri Jan 16 23:59:07 2009

my speedometer is on the wrong side of the peg. i reset everything by holding the trip meter down but it still has'nt corrected itself. is it the speedometer sensor? if so where is it located.

Reply #7 larry (65.28.237.144) - Tue Mar 3 20:06:46 2009

I used keith's instructions for resetting the speedometer needle stuck on the wrong side of the peg by pushing and holding the odometer reset button and it worked as he described. Thanks Keith

Pulled up your Site and would like to Thank Keith Reply #5 Jan 15.

I followed instructions and it worked perfectly. Thanks again , for not only did it save the $150.00 possible cost, but the many, many hours of waiting to get serviced.

The reset worked perfectly Keith! Thanks from me also...now I would just like to know what caused it and what all this operation resets. The van wouldn't start last night and after jiglling the wires it started and the needle was in this position.

Reply #12 Mike (74.126.29.34) - Tue May 26 21:45:57 2009

I did the reset Keith #5 suggested and it worked. Thanks for your help. With Van/ignition off push down on the trip odometer button until code sof 4.0 flashes keep held down until dash lights start flashing and in about 30 seconds the reset is complete.

I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan runs great but having a problem with the speedo and all of the gauges not working at times. Then I pound 1 time on the top of the dash and it will start to work but then the ck. eng. lite will come on! I have checked the code and it reads the pcm & the tcm are not comm. I then cancel the code and in a few days it happenes again. Do you have any Idea how or what to fix or replace?

Thanks Phil

Hey Keith

Thanks much for the tip on getting the needle to the correct side of the peg.

It took less than a minute.

It was really helpful at this time since I expect to trade the van in, in about two weeks.

Thanks

Bill

My 96 Caravan speedometer drops to zero at highway speeds, sometimes bouncing back to normal. At the same time acceleration will quit for a few seconds and then come back. Preceding all this, the "check engine soon" light has been on for the last month. What gives? A friend said it was a stripped plastic gear where the seedometer cable enters the transmission, but I can find no such part in book or on line.

Reply #20 Goneflyn (216.241.197.47) - Tue Jul 7 22:25:32 2009

I seen this Somewhere before and could not find it when I needed it, But here is my version,

My speedometer in my 98 dodge neon was intermittent,

Tach, Speedometer, gauges all were effected.

I removed Top of dash by gently prying it up around display,

Removed screws around display, Pull forward to disconnect, I dissembled the speedometer and the solder connections behind the dash plug were broken, I re-soldered connections and fixed the problem, Assemble in reverse order of course.

Reply #21 Wayne (216.227.120.246) - Sat Jul 11 13:08:00 2009

I have a 96 dodge caravan that had an intermittent speedometer. When it quits I believe that it causes the torque converter to unlock as it appears to change gears. It must cause the computer to get a false reading. The speedometer has quit altogether now. I have changed out the speedometer sensor with no change to the problem. I was told there was an input sensor also but when I get one from Napa they are always the wrong ones. I would like to know where the input sensor is located on the transmission or if there is another problem.

Phil,

(Reply #16 Phil (68.83.161.194) - Sun Jun 21 09:03:06 2009)

I saw your post on the web and it looks like the exact same thing that was happening with my 98 Dodge GC. Here is what I did to fix it:

I pulled the instrument cluster (IC) out - not a difficult job, and takes about 10 minutes or less to do. You first have to remove the interior molding around the cluster and steering wheel. There are a dozen or so screws that need to be undone all around and below the steering wheel and the Park-Brake release. Once those are removed, gently pull the molding away - there are self-releasing clips that hold some of it in place. And be careful for the wires to the light control switch et cetera.

The IC itself is also kept in place by a number of screws, and of course is connected to everything else by a cable strip which hooks into the bck of the panel. There is enough space to unhook the cable if you pull the cluster half-way out.

One I had the IC out, I checked for cracked solder points on the circuit board that drives the IC. I found a number of them, particularly where the cable harness hooks into the circuit board. I resoldered the all the points that had cracks, and never had the problem again.

The PCM & TCM not communicating comes from the short in the points. Ambient temperature will also affect the communication as warm weather will expand the points and cold will contract them causing errors.

Once you re-solder the points, it should be fixed. At least that is what worked for me.

I spent about $3 on a soldering iron from Harbor Freight. That was it - oh, plus the many hours of frustration trying to discover what was causing the problem.

Hope it helps.

I had the same problem, the peg was on the wrong side of speedometer on a Chrysler Grand Voyager (European version of Dodge Caravan).

Keith's solution worked first time.

Thanks Keith - saved me around 100 pounds ($160).

I had check engine light come on and tried to read with my OBD2, it came back with ERR. I brought in a local car repair shop and after an hour they could not read and suggest me to bring it to the dealer. They said may be my computer has to be re-programmed, or replaced. Any idea? I check pin 4 and pin 16 on the obd2 connector on the car and it read 12+ volts.

Wow. Thanks Keith. Yet another speedo reset. Our Caravan has had so many weird electric problems over the years. Great advice!

One more!

THANK YOU KEITH!

Worked for me! (Gave a code 3.3. Not sure what that means but worked)

This is definitely electrical. My starter seems to be going out but perhaps this is just part of the electrical things going on. Also my headlights also flash when I start the car.

The speedometer on my 2002 Grand caravan was also stuck on the wrong side of the peg. I was envisioning a day without my van to get it fixed, decided to do some research... a few clicks later I found this site, and held down the trip button, saw a great light show and now it is fixed! I can't wait to tell my husband.

Thank you!!!
