van is using about a qt of oil between changes (3000mi)but does not smoke and is not leaking it out is this a sign of major trouble to come

Ed - In my experience over the past 45 years, oil does not evaporate. If you are a quart low every 3000 miles, the engine is doing SOMETHING with it. If you are NOT leaking oil, NOT smoking, then the other place would be a leak between oil and water. Check your radiator to see if there is any oil residue (if there is it will be very noticible). Also wipe the inside of the tail-pipe to see if there is any oil residue there. Those are the only three places that I know of that the oil can be going. Burning, leaking, into the cooling system.
