tailgate lock stuck

The tailgate will not open and it is in the "up" position so I can not do anything to work on it. How do I open the tailgate. When I pull on the latch I hear a sound on the drivers side of the tailgate but it will not open. What do I do?

If you look up under the handle, you can see where the linkage connects to the handle. You may have to remove the trim from around the handle to get to the rods of the linkage. Once you have access to them, there is a little plastic piece that holds the linkage in place. The snap into place. Flip them up so they aren't holding the linkage in place any more. You can then slip the linkage rods out of the handle assembly and pull them independently to get the latch on each side to release. This should help you troubleshoot whether the issue is in the handle assembly or one of the latches.

2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup tailgate hard to close. You really have to slam it hard to get it to latch. Was normal in the past.
