What you have is a defective dash cluster. I had this same problem along with some speedo issues. I called the National Chevrolet Customer Service department and they directed me to the dealer and it was replaced free of charge as a known problem, it is easier to get this done before you have 100K on the truck. If you get any heartburn from them, keep calling the national customer service #. When you call them, they will give you a case # to follow this complaint with. There is no remedy other than having it replaced and if you pay for it the sum will be around $700 on a good day. When you get this done, please make sure that all of your dash and steering wheel options work, like the radio and driver data information buttons and readouts as they forgot to hook these wire harnesses back up when the steering wheel was replaced. Good luck, be persistent if necessary.

I also had a speedometer problem in my 2004 Chevrolet Silveradothe speedometer was not working at all and I found a website where I had it fixed for $140. That was a lot cheaper than the $700 that the dealer wanted to replace the instrument panel. Here is the website in case you want to check it out: speedometergaugerepair dot com

Any suggestions where to start? Some people have suggested a speed sensor?

I had 3 of my guages go out on me over a period of time. After looking for clues here on the internet, someone turned me onto the known Chevy problem. You need to take your vehicle to your local dealer. They will assess the problem for warranty, which is good up to 7 years on this known problem. Should it be proven their problem, they will fix it for free within about 10 days once the part(s) is ordered. Keep in mind the initial look may cost about $75 should it not be associated with the dash board. I had no problems with getting mine fixed for free because of the extended chevy warranty on this problem. You should not have to call any claim center. Good Luck

I've had problems with my 2004 Chevrolet Silverado starting at about 70, 000 mi. The first was a speedometer that stopped functioning. Then the "engine service" yellow icon came on. Before I made it to the dealer for servicing the speedometer returned to working? The dealer did an oil change, cleared the service engine light and told me they couldn't find a problem. Now that I know about the defect I wonder why they didn't mention the defect? After a few days the light came on again, and within a month the speedometer stopped working again, however this time it was all the guages in the cluster ceased to operate. I used my GPS for a speedometer and by filling the fuel tank and resetting the GPS's trip meter Im able to calculate, to a certain degree, the fuel level and speed. Now the blue high-beam light glows at night and the dealer says It will cost between $350-$500! I baby my truck. My brother and I have had Chevy/GM vehicles since the '70's. Im losing faith in GM Quality Control. I've seen other comments online where GM admits the defect and Mr. GoodWrench takes care of the cost. How do I find the alleged claim site? Thanks in advance for any help! -Kevin Callahan kevincocoa@aol.com
