Check the vacuum lines on transfer case. Not sure of the technical name (possibly modulater or actuater) If this is bad you will get tranny fluid into your engine. Then your looking at problems. Take the canister off and see if you have oil in it, if so its back feeding.
I'm having the same problem as Tom mentioned with my 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup. While driving in 2-wheel drive the transfer case partially shifts into 4-wheel, makes strange noise and loses traction. Engine and transmission are working properly.
My question is to Tom or anyone else familiar with same problem. Did you find out what was wrong and how to fix it? Appreciate hearing from you. thanks.
I was having the same problem, it was working recently before, then when i tried it the other day, it would blink on the 4x4 switch inside the truck. So i took apart the acutuator to see if its pulling to stay in place and it wasn't doing anything. then i tried doing it with the part disembled, there was no air at all. So i'm starting to think the 4x4 motor is shocked, but i can here it under the truck.
Im not sure whats going on. I have a 2002 ZR2 my 4high i dont think works but 4 low does is this possible and what could i do to make sure everything works as it should
There are 2 possibilities that I have found that could be the issue. Things were changed in different years...The transfer case has an electric motor for engaging the 4-wheel drive on some which goes bad and needs to be replaced. Not that expensive and available at most autoparts stores. The other issue can be a vacuum leak. Some of the transfer cases were switched with vacuum. This could also be the issue for Alex. There is a valve actuator that is located under the battery with a cable to engage the front wheels. This vacuum line can develop a leak(s) and cause problems at the transfer case and the front axle. One of the additional side effects may be the front axle not wanting to come out of 4 engagement when you try to go to 2 wheel.
