How can you tell if you have a 401 or a 425 engine? Thanks Jay

Interesting question. My 64 Riviera has the original owners manual in the glove box with 401 circled. The other possible engine listed is the 425 with dual carbs. The really curious part is that the bore and stroke of each engine is the same in the book.Googling Riviera 64 seems to show that 401 was discontinued after 63 and all 64 Riviera engines were 425. But, recently in Hemmings I saw a 64 with a 401 listed. Could it be that the owners manuals had a misprint? Or were some 401s used for a while in 64? I, too, would like to get to the bottom of this one.

the engine production code , which is stamped on the front of theblock near the head attaches, does give data, the # it gives the last 8 numbers to the VIN and you will be able to tell if the engine is the one that came in the car originally or not. Maybe you have a 401 that is not the original engine and thats why 401 is circled? hope that helps

I am purchasing a 1964 Riviera. It has road wheels like a 65 with a spinner. Where these rims offered in 1964? Bob

I'm looking for a complete 425 engine for my 1964 Buick Riviera Wildcat. It was a gift from my father and has been sitting in the garage for at least 20 years, low miles. When I start it up, I can hear the rods knocking. I'm sure it needs a new engine, and I can't find a place to purchase one. Mr. Lewis

Eugene, i would highly recommend that you have that engine rebuilt. Resale with matching numbers will be well worth the investment.

To ALL Riviera Owners, no matter what the year of your prized RIV.The best thing you can do as a Riviera owner, especially if you wish to keep your car is to join the Riviera Owners Association also known as the ROA. This is a nation wide organization with ONLY Riviera's. They have a classified section, parts suppliers, salvage yards that specialize in Rivs. You have the ability to contact others with the same year Riv. Go to their web site at www.rivowners.org or contact the office at office@rivowners.org or call 303-233-2987. They also print an excellent color bi-monthly magazine dedicated to Rivieras. You won't regret it. And while you are at it join the Buick Club of America where EVERYTHING is Buick -
